Friday night saw the winners of 2011 Victoria Architecture Awards announced and it was AAMI Park by Cox Architecture unsurprisingly scooping the pool. AAMI Park otherwise known as “the rectangular stadium” or “idontwearblack’s favourite building eva” took out the night’s highest honour in the form of the Victorian Architecture Medal along with the Melbourne Prize, the William Wardell Award for Public Architecture and the Colorbond Award for Steel Architecture. All bias aside, this is one of best buildings that has been produced in Melbourne in a while in terms of the way it has been resolved in all areas of design.
Other multiple award winners were John Wardle Architects picking up awards for the Victoria University Learning Commons and Exercise Sports Science Project (for the building with the longest name) and 500 Bourke Street, NH Architecture for the Myer Redevelopment, Elenberg Fraser for the A’Beckett Tower and Kerstin Thompson Architects for MUMA.
Two of my favourite categories are the Residential and the Residential Alterations & Additions categories (basically because I’m looking to steal ideas for my own house) and it was pleasing to see NMBW Architecture Studio pick up the main award for their Sorrento House as well as idontwearblack favourites, nest architects pick up a gong for their Boston Villa project.
